The design minimizes openings when closed, which should keep insects out. Unlike our previous can with a foot mechanism, this one has fewer gaps for bugs to get in. It does need batteries to open automatically, but you can manually use it if needed. While you can't really toss trash in from a distance and expect it to catch, the hand sensor is responsive for normal use. It's been a significant upgrade for us.
